NASA’s 411 on Extraterrestrial Life

Are we alone?

Life of extraterrestrial origin is out there. This is the word from NASA. (Yes, really.) The agency has predicted that we’ll see “indications” of life outside of Earth within 10 years….and have evidence of it by 2045.

We suspect that this announcement is a much bigger deal than NASA is letting on. It feels like we are being prepared for something, doesn’t it? Although NASA is referring to microbial life (not big-headed little creatures with huge eyes and spindly limbs), consider the fact that this is not the first time NASA has made this claim. Also consider the fact that when it comes to the question ‘Are we alone?’ the U.S. government tends to flip out — making blanket denials and sputtering contradictory nonsense like a Lothario caught in the act. The way we see it, for a government agency to state not once, but twice, that we should expect to meet life from outside this planet within a specific time frame….that’s HUGE. Bottom line: NASA is most likely already aware of the existence of life originating outside of Earth (microbial or otherwise).

But time, as they say, will tell.

PS — Did you know there are Ocean Worlds all over our solar system?

How Star Wars Ruined Sci-Fi

Star Wars

It’s been a long slide downhill since the original….

If you care about sci-fi, check out this piece entitled “How Star Wars Ruined Sci-Fi.” It’s one of the best op-ed pieces I’ve read in a minute. Big up to this writer for so eloquently and insightfully discussing the demise of sci-fi film and the slippery slope of commercialism that has transformed the very chromosomes of the American film industry — particularly science fiction. Yes, there is a business that supports film — but do not get it twisted: filmmaking is an art.

I give the writer, Lewis Beale, even more love for not only shouting out Octavia Butler, but also for pointing out the insanity of her work and the work of other top-notch sci-fi novelists (like Joe Halderman’s The Forever War) not being adapted to film because they’re ‘too smart’ and don’t fit into Hollywood’s moronically simplistic sci-fi lexicon of CGI, weapons battles and tired archetypes. Can I get a witness?

I have two things to say: a new day is dawning…and sci-fi 4eva!

Introducing Roxë15, The Movie Art

Roxe1Web_1000px_COPYRIGHT

ARTWORK and TITLE: Copyright 2013, Artistic Freedom Ltd. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Any duplication, derivation or use is EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN.

We are pleased as punch to unveil the key artwork for my sci-fi short film, Roxë15. UK artist Rowan Stocks-Moore has produced 3 hot & gorgeous pieces of artwork for the project. Rowan was the bomb.com to work with and we’re stoked about how this art captures the stark world of the film *and* hints at the psycho-digital thang that rocks Roxë’s world.

Meantime, post-production marches on. Editor Jack Pearley is rolling with the creative punches, working it out. Also, we’ve just brought on NYC visual effects artist Adam Wiesen to give Roxë15 a nice dose of “yuck” factor. Welcome to Team Roxë, Adam!

Next up: motion graphics wizard Kate Thomson will soon be bringing her cyber-fabulous-bad-assness to the mix. Stay tuned.

GODSPEED: Catch the Vibe

We are moving ever forward with the sci-fi feature film called Godspeed. It’s not your grandmother’s science fiction but this project is coming together quite nicely.

We’ll let the pictures do the talking.

GODSPEED: an independent sci-fi feature film. Celia C. Peters, Writer + Director, Gina Charbonnet, Producer.

ROXË15: Update!

You’re probably wondering:
Where in the world is Roxë?

A new voice in science fiction

Roxë15: A sci fi short film

We are thrilled to report that as you read these words,
Roxë15 is in the very capable hands of superb editor Lamont Jack Pearley!
YAAAAAY!

Lamont Jack Pearley

He’s very serious about editing: Lamont Jack Pearley

Jack (who’s also a fantastic filmmaker in his own right) has edited for Bloomberg Business Week and City Lights Media, worked production with Upright Citizens Brigade and in the documentary world — not to mention his work producing, directing and editing his films and Web series. We’re amped that he is now slicing, dicing and cutting Roxë15 into the future-forward visual journey it’s destined to be. Our ETA for the finished film? Early 2014. After Jack does his thing, we still have a couple more post-production bases to cover before prime time…..but baby, we are well on our way.

Stay tuned!

Women. Who Needs ‘Em?

BLOG_no way-sexist_tiger rugMisogyny….it’s so tired, so neanderthal — so repulsive, so useless. Yet and still, unlike the extinct pint-sized sub-species, misogyny and it’s little brother, male chauvinism, continue to live. This post could go anywhere, but we will focus on how this cancer keeps contaminating one of our fave things in the world: film.

It’s hard to believe, but in this day and age, there are still those who are seriously selling the B.S. line that a woman should not/cannot carry a film. Films like the sci-fi flick “Gravity.” Not long ago, director Alfonso Cuarón revealed that he was pressured to change the gender of the lead character of “Gravity,” played by Sandra Bullock, to be male. ( And let’s be clear: Cuarón wrote the “Gravity’s” script about this woman character with his son.)

Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone in “Gravity” (2013)

Enough already.

BLOG_ripley images

Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in “Alien” (1979).

Enough of this ridiculous knee-jerk assumption that stories of adventure, intrigue, daring or importance are testosterone territory. One of the most memorable characters in contemporary science fiction, Ripley from the “Alien” film franchise (rocked out by Sigourney Weaver), was written as a man, but director Ridley Scott thought the movie would be more interesting if Ripley was a woman. Now imagine how much less memorable “Alien” would’ve been as yet another sci-fi flick with a male protagonist battling aliens in deep space.  See how that works?

Clearly, some people (and by ‘people’, I mean pathetic men and the pea-brained women who let these dudes shape their thinking) are very resistant to the reality that women and men are equal. Not the SAME, but equal in value. Everything in science, nature and divinity confirms this. And no amount of misogyny, chauvinism, male worship or plain old wishful thinking is ever going to change that fact….so for the love of God, deal with it and stop trying to derail great storytelling with your intellectually impotent nonsense. Here’s a 21st century news flash: like so many other things once thought to be the exclusive domain of men (voting, driving, running one’s own sex life, being boss, having a bank account, and yes….even acting), the jobs of lead actor and (gasp!) even film director, have both fallen into women’s greedy little hands. And guess what? We’re not going anywhere.

The 5 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Masterpieces?

**According to editor Steven James Snyder and the rest of Techland, that is. Click the image to get Snyder’s list.

Silent Running

From ‘Silent Running’ (1972). Ever seen it?

I def agree with #4, haven’t see #3 and #5 yet, have to revisit #2. And I like #1 but I definitely don’t think it’s #1. Hmmmm….I feel a Top 10 list of my own coming on.

So tell me — what do you think?? What are YOUR top 5 sci-fi masterpieces?

Thank you for being invested!

We eternally grateful for all of the many forms of love that have come to this project from so many corners. Without audience, there is no point — so having you with us means everything…. and we will be loving you right back. We very much look forward to presenting a sci-fi film that is fresh, authentic and innovative.

BEWARE THIS VIRUS

virus CU_brite

Of course, it doesn’t pop up until the year 2051…in virtual reallity….but you can never be too careful. It’s pretty focused on getting Roxë, but anything is posible in VR. And don’t get it twisted: this digital monster is stealth. It doesn’t speak, it doesn’t feel, and it’s brutally efficient. Just saying.

Check out the very un-monstrous Daniel Moser, who plays the virus in Roxë15, talking about his inhuman character. Daniel is nothing like the photo —- honest.

Roxë15 is raising money for post-production on IndieGoGo until Sept. 30. Help make this film happen — become a backer today!
